Howard Hian is an award-winning journalist formerly affiliated with the North American Travel Journalists Association and the Military Press (think COVID). He still writes travel features for his Facebook and LinkedIn pages along with blogs for clients. He believes his secret to writing a good story is having an in-house proofreader and editor (his wife). Hian was a long-time member of the San Diego Hotel Motel Association and served as an allied representative on their Board of Directors. In 2012 he was the San Diego hotel industry’s Allied Person of the Year. For several years he served as a panel member on the City of San Diego’s Economic Development Division.
Hian has been playing poker for six decades. Over the past few years, he has played 30,000+ hands of Omaha High/Low and 40,000+ of Hold ‘Em in home games, computer simulations, online and in casinos and card rooms. In February 2014, he launched an app, Poker Tutorial: Omaha 101 – Improve Your Game and/or Learn the Basics. The app was downloaded in over 40 countries around the world. Its updated version Poker Tutorial: Omaha 101 Plus An Insiders Guide To Reno was available free in the iTunes store. In 2015, it won a Gold in the app category in the North American Travel Journalist Association’s writing competition. Unfortunately, the FTC and Apple put an end to many apps, including his. However, his PokerResorts.net is still going strong and his gaming/travel stories and blog can be read there. Hian also writes a twice-monthly blog for Casino 99 in Chico, CA.
Here’s his winning hand at a hold ’em turbo tournament at the Riverboat Casino in Laughlin, NV. My Queen-10 flopped a full-boat.
